Typography

Typography is the art and technique of arranging type.

Most people never think about typography. They don’t understand the psychological effect it has in relation to conveying a message. The shapes and forms that make up the letters in a font can convey seriousness, whimsy, playfulness, or even anger — all of which color your perception about the message being delivered.

Typography is an extremely significant part of design; it’s a driving force in all forms of communication and art. Can you imagine reading a magazine, checking out a website, playing with an app, or watching TV without any text? Probably not. We rely on font choices to help set the tone for whatever we’re reading or interacting with.

The typography we’ve chosen for KID will help convey the professional tone and personality of your organization.

Montserrat

This versatile font is part of the Google Fonts library and is licensed and available for free download and use both on the web and on desktop computers. The old posters and signs in the traditional Montserrat neighborhood of Buenos Aires inspired typography designer Julieta Ulanovsky to design a typeface that rescues the beauty of urban typography from the first half of the twentieth century.

Montserrat is to be used as a headline font, and should always be used in ALL CAPS for headlines. There are several weights of this font; the main heading on a page should use the Bold weight, while all subheadings on a page should use the Regular weight.

Lato

This versatile font is part of the Google Fonts library and is licensed and available for free download and use both on the web and on desktop computers. Lato is a sans serif typeface family started in the summer of 2010 by Warsaw, Poland-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). In December 2010, the Lato family was published under the Open Font License by his foundry tyPoland, with support from Google.

Lato is to be used as a body copy font for general paragraph text. There are several weights of this font; the text on a page should generally use the Regular weight variation. (If you use a larger font size to accentuate the opening lines of a paragraph, consider using the Light or even Hairline weights.)
